  • WHAT CAN YOU DO?
  • Different forms of bullying include:

    • verbal- name calling, nasty comments, false accusations, racist slurs, homophobic comments, sarcastic put downs, spreading vicious rumours, threats, etc.
    • relational –excluding , isolating ,ruining reputations, destroying friendships,  ignoring, glaring, etc.
    • physical – extortion, various forms of physical aggression, such as  hitting, pushing, kicking etc.
    • electronic- using emails, text messages, instant messages, personal web pages and /or online polls, etc. to hurt embarrass, destroy a reputation or exclude others.
    • males tend to be more involved in physical bullying 
    • females are more likely to engage in relational attacks, which tend to peak between grade 6- 8.

     

    A 2004 study by the Canadian Public Health Association found:

      • 41% of students reported being involved in relational aggression as either victim or bullies
      • 32% reported being involved in physical bullying as either victims or bullies
      • 18% reported they had called other students racist names.

       

      Negative consequences of bullying for victims, bullies and bystanders include:

        • victims – physical hurt, anxiety, shame, low self esteem, dread school, fear, poor concentration, isolation, health problems.
        • bullies –don’t learn to build positive relationships, can have a   negative reputation, can’t manage their emotions, become unpopular, more likely to be in an abusive relationship, more likely to be in trouble with the law.
        • bystanders – suffer from feelings of helplessness, frustration, stress, anger, guilt
